Combo & Detachable Neck Turnout Rugs

A combo or detachable neck turnout rug gives full coverage from poll to tail in one piece, rather than leaving the neck bare or asking you to buy a separate cover. It is the straightforward choice for clipped horses, fine-coated breeds and anyone who would rather not gamble on the weather turning colder overnight.

This collection brings together every combo and detachable neck rug we stock, from Shires, Weatherbeeta, Gallop, Horseware Ireland and more, across every fill weight we carry.

Combo or detachable, what is the difference?

A combo neck is sewn in permanently, so the rug always covers the poll and neck as one fixed piece. It suits horses that need the same level of cover whatever the day brings, and it is one less thing to lose in the field.

A detachable neck does the same job but unzips or unclips away, so one rug can flex between a covered neck on a cold morning and a standard cut once the sun is out.

Neither is more correct than the other; it comes down to how much you want to adjust your horse's rug through the day.

Start with the weight, then the neck

Fill weight still does most of the work of keeping your horse comfortable, so it is worth choosing that first. Our 0g, 50g, 100g, 200g and 300g turnout collections each include their own combo and detachable neck options, and everything on this page sits in one of them too.

Not sure which weight your horse needs? Our rug weight guide walks through clip, coat and workload to help you land on the right one.

If your horse already has a standard neck rug that fits well, you do not need to replace it. A separate neck cover does the same job and lets you keep the rug you have got.

Fit and care

Measure from the centre of your horse's chest to the point of the buttock for body length as usual, then check the neck opening sits close to the throat without pressing on the windpipe or rubbing at the poll.

A neck that gapes lets in wind and rain, defeating the point of buying one. Once you are into rug season properly, our rug wash and reproofing range will keep the waterproofing working through repeated washes.
