Choosing the Right Electric Fence Reels
The best reel depends on more than the overall length of your fence. Consider how frequently the boundary will be moved, the conductor you use and how much control you need when winding and paying out the line.
- Choose a geared reel for fencing that is moved regularly. A 3:1 gearing ratio, for example, turns the drum three times for each turn of the handle, significantly reducing the effort required when winding longer runs.
- Match the reel capacity to your conductor. Tape is wider and occupies more drum space than thin polywire, so a reel rated for hundreds of metres of wire may hold considerably less tape.
- Allow spare drum capacity rather than filling a reel completely. This makes winding easier and reduces the risk of tape or wire slipping over the sides, tangling or becoming damaged.
- For temporary paddocks and strip grazing, combine reels with electric fence posts so boundaries can be repositioned efficiently.
- Use suitable electric fence insulators and wire tensioners and strainers to maintain a secure, correctly tensioned fence line.
Electric Fence Reel Setup, Storage and Care
A reel manages the conductor, but it does not determine how effectively the fence is energised. The complete system must be correctly matched, installed and maintained. Choose appropriate electric fence energisers, including battery fence energisers, mains fence energisers or solar fence energisers, according to your field layout and access to power.
Check the fence regularly with an electric fence tester, particularly after moving a temporary boundary, heavy vegetation growth or poor weather. For poultry and smallholding applications, purpose-designed electric poultry netting may provide a more appropriate containment system.
