When it comes to competing, correct rider turnout is essential to impress the judge and this includes correctly choosing a horse riding stock or tie, finished with a stock pin. 

Horse Riding Stock

A horse riding stock is a type of cravat, traditionally worn around the neck of horse riders around the collar of the stock shirt. Originating from hunting, horse riding stocks are typically made from cotton or silk material and are designed to complete the overall look of your competition shirt.  Traditionally, in the event of an accident, the stock would serve as a temporary bandage or sling but many modern stocks are pre-tied so this function has been lost!  Horse riding stocks are available in fabrics with more ornate designs including crystal detailing or silk inlay for dressage and showjumping, whilst more traditional check designs are suited to hunting.  It is important to check you have a stock shirt if you intend to use a stock to ensure it sits correctly on your neck.

Horse Riding Tie

The horse riding tie is a less formal alternative to the horse riding stock and is traditionally worn for showing. Horse riding ties come in a variety of styles and colors, allowing riders to match their tweed check with their accessories for a complete, well turned-out look.  Often in showing, riders will select a contrast design such as stars, spots or diamonds on their show tie to complete their showing outfit.  If you intend to wear a tie with your competition shirt, it is essential to select a collared competition shirt.

Horse Riding Stock Pin

The horse riding stock pin is an essential accessory that secures the stock in place and completes the look. Stock pins are decorative, featuring intricate designs that can range from simple and elegant crop or pin designs to much more ornate designs including pearls and diamantes.  Traditionally hunt stock pins tend to be plain pins or very simple, traditional designs such as fox head, riding crop or bit designs whilst dressage riders and showjumpers often prefer a more ornate, eye-catching stock pin design.
