200g stable rugs for cold nights in the stable

A 200g stable rug sits in the middle of the range, giving a horse more warmth overnight than a 100g without tipping into full heavyweight territory. For a clipped horse stabled through a British winter it is often the rug that does the most work between November and March.

Stable rug or turnout rug?

A stable rug is built for indoor use and focuses on warmth and breathability. It is not waterproof, so it is not a substitute for a turnout rug in the field. Many owners run a lighter rug in the stable than they would outdoors, because a stable is sheltered and a horse generates heat lying down in a deep bed.

When a 200g suits

It tends to suit clipped horses, finer coated types, older horses and poor doers, and any horse stabled in an older or draughty barn.

Rugging needs vary a good deal between individuals, so weigh up breed, age, condition, coat and how well the stable holds heat, and check underneath the rug regularly rather than following a chart.

A horse sweating under too much fill is no better off than one that is cold.

Fit and layering

Measure from the centre of the chest to the furthest point of the hindquarters and check against the manufacturer's size guide.

A standard neck rug leaves the neck bare, a combo gives continuous coverage, and a detachable neck lets you adjust as the weather changes.

If you already own a standard neck rug with D rings, adding a neck cover is cheaper than buying a combo.
