100g stable rugs for milder nights in the stable

A 100g stable rug is the everyday option for autumn, spring and milder winter nights. It gives a clipped or finer-coated horse enough warmth to stay comfortable overnight without the bulk of a heavier fill, and for many horses it is the rug that stays on the door for most of the year.

Stable rug or turnout rug?

A stable rug is built for indoor use and focuses on warmth and breathability rather than weather protection. It is not waterproof, so it will not do the job of a turnout rug in the field. A sheltered stable and a deep bed mean most horses need less rug indoors than out.

When a 100g suits

It suits clipped horses on milder nights, finer types, and horses in a well sheltered barn. Hardy natives and good doers often manage with less.

As always, consider breed, age, condition, coat and clipping alongside the forecast, and check underneath the rug regularly rather than working to a chart.

Fit and layering

Measure from the centre of the chest to the furthest point of the hindquarters and compare against the manufacturer's size guide.

A standard neck leaves the neck uncovered, a combo runs from body into neck, and a detachable neck gives you the option to adjust.

A neck cover added to a standard neck rug is often cheaper and more flexible than buying a combo, and under rugs and liners let you build warmth without buying a heavier rug.
