Waterproof Riding Jackets

How to choose a waterproof riding jacket

Start with the waterproof rating. Ours run from 3,000mm, which is plenty for ordinary showers and everyday yard work, up to 10,000mm for genuinely wet days out hacking. Taped seams matter just as much, because water finds the stitching long before it finds the fabric, and most of the jackets here have them.

After that it comes down to breathability and cut. A jacket that keeps the rain out but traps sweat will feel just as damp by the time you have finished mucking out, and a jacket cut for the high street will pull across the shoulders and ride up at the back the moment you sit in the saddle. If you wear a body protector, size up rather than squeezing the jacket over the top, and check you can still lift both arms freely.

Which jacket for which job

For schooling and everyday yard work, a lightweight jacket is usually enough and far easier to live with. For hacking out in real weather, or a long day at a competition, go for a higher rating and a longer cut. Hi-viz is worth considering if you ride on the roads at all, particularly once the clocks go back.

We stock LeMieux, Equetech, Woof Wear, Toggi, Shires Aubrion, Hy Equestrian, Dublin, Cameo Equine and HKM, from £33.95 up to £180 for a heated coat, in ladies, mens, unisex and young rider sizes. Most styles run UK 6 to UK 18, with some going up to UK 20.

Care and related ranges

Wash on a technical wash rather than ordinary detergent, skip the fabric conditioner and reproof once or twice a season to keep the water beading.

For more coverage in the saddle, our long riding coats sit lower over your seat and legs, and waterproof riding trousers finish the job in properly wet weather. There are equine dry robes for afterwards, the full range in coats and jackets, and body protectors if you are checking fit underneath.
