A short riding coat sits at the hip rather than covering your seat, which makes it the easier jacket to live with for most of the year. It does not bunch under a saddle, it will not flap in the wind, and it is far less to carry when the weather turns out better than forecast. For riding, yard jobs, dog walking and everything in between, a short coat is usually the one that ends up on the back of the door.
