200g turnout rugs for autumn, spring and milder winter turnout
A 200g turnout rug is the middle weight in the range, offering more warmth than a 100g without the bulk of a heavyweight. For a lot of UK horses it is the rug that does the most work across the year.
Our collection includes 200g horse turnout rugs in standard neck, combo and detachable neck designs from Shires, Horseware Ireland, Gallop, LeMieux, Bucas, HorseGuard and StormX, with outers from 600 denier up to 1200 denier.
When should you use a 200g turnout rug?
A 200g rug may suit clipped horses, finer coated types, older horses and poor doers, and horses living out full time through the shoulder seasons. Rugging needs vary a great deal between individuals, so consider your horse's breed, age, condition, coat, whether they are clipped and how much shelter they have, alongside the forecast. Check underneath the rug regularly.
A horse that is sweating under too much fill is no better off than one that is cold.
If conditions turn properly cold, compare our 300g turnout rugs. For milder weather, our 100g turnout rugs and 150g turnout rugs may be a better fit.
Choosing the right 200g rug
Alongside fill weight, look at the outer fabric, the fit and the neck design. A higher denier or ripstop outer tends to stand up better to everyday field wear, which matters if your horse plays hard or lives out with others.
A standard neck rug leaves the neck uncovered, a combo gives continuous coverage from body into neck, and a detachable neck lets you add or remove coverage as conditions change.
Check each product description to see whether a neck cover is included.
For fit, measure from the centre of the chest to the furthest point of the hindquarters and compare against the manufacturer's size guide. If you already own a standard neck rug with D rings, you can add a neck cover rather than buying a combo.
To layer on colder nights, see our under rugs and liners.
