  2. Sprenger Dynamic RS Full Cheek
    £170.40

The cheeks prevent the bit from being pulled through the mouth, making the bit sit very quietly in the horse's mouth. The bit also avoids inconvenient pressure on the back teeth. The cheeks make it useful for turning aids especially with young horses. This works by gentle pressure being applied against the face on the outside of turn supports the ride's aids making turns much easier for the horse to understand and for the rider to carry out. Available in both Sensogan and Aurigan.

Sensogan – the new and improved version of Aurigan made from copper, zinc and manganese. Sensogan utilises the favourable taste and salivation levels provided by Aurgian but builds on these for improved feel and acceptance. Sensogan is a revolutionary new material designed for maximum comfort and relaxation. The main difference offered by Sensogan is due to the unique combination of copper and manganese which results in a smoother and far more regulated oxidative process which has proven very appealing to the horse in field tests; particularly if you have a horse who over-plays with the bit. This revolutionary compound has resulted in less copper discharge helping the bit retain its white-gold colouration for longer. The huge success of Sensogan is also due to its manganese content; this micro nutrient is extremely popular in the feeding regime of sports horses as tests have concluded that manganese aids in muscle and energy metabolism. Furthermore, feeding manganese has resulted in a reduction in tension in horses and we are finding that tense horses are far more relaxed in the mouth when ridden in Sensogan.

Fixed Cheek Snaffles

Snaffles are the most common groups of bits for every day riding. Snaffle bits are identified as having no leverage or pulley action and do not have a curb chain. There is a vast variety of snaffle bits on the market, allowing you to find the most suitable option for your horse. They vary in severity, depending on the type and thickness of the mouthpiece. Snaffles apply pressure to the lips, tongues and bars of the mouth and have a general upwards action, encouraging the horse to raise his head and neck.

Fixed cheek snaffles are designed so that the mouthpiece does not move independently of the bit rings – they are “fixed” together (the alternative to loose ring snaffles). This minimises the amount of movement the mouthpiece can have, stabilising it inside the horse’s mouth. A stable bit can have multiple benefits for the horse, including giving confidence to a young or green horse in accepting a contact and helping to improve steering.

Examples of “fixed cheek” snaffles are:

When selecting the correct bit for your horse remember that conformation, age, stage of training, type of work, oral health and your ability as a rider are all contributing factors. If in doubt, it’s recommended that the rider seek advice from their instructor when choosing a bit.
