Getting the fit right

A headpiece that pinches behind the ears or a noseband fastened too tight can make even a calm horse unsettled in the contact. As a quick check, you should be able to fit two fingers under the noseband and a hand's width between the throatlash and your horse's cheek, and the browband shouldn't pull the headpiece forward into the ears. If your horse is between sizes, mixing parts often gives a better fit than a full set.
