When Should I Use A Cooler/Fleece Rug?

Are you confused by the number of different types of cooler and fleece rugs available on the market, why you should use them and which one you need? Hopefully our handy guide will help you to choose!

What is the difference between a fleece rug and a cooler rug?

The primary difference between a fleece and a cooler is the material; fleeces are denser, designed to add warmth for winter use while coolers are typically a lightweight and fully breathable mesh material.

Fleece rugs:

Made from cosy fleece fabric for warmth in colder weather Thicker feel of fabric when compared to mesh coolers

Cooler rugs:

Made from thinner mesh or lightweight material: look for “mesh coolers” or “scrim coolers” for a lightweight and functional cooler rug for warmer weather through the summer Waffle coolers are a useful in-between option for cold/mild weather. The small squares which make up the waffle fabric have excellent thermal and wicking properties, making this a technical and functional option for your horse’s wardrobe.

Why should you use a fleece or cooler?

A fleece and/or cooler will be the most versatile rug in your horse’s wardrobe. The main purpose of this type of rug is to speed up the drying process; the material efficiently wicks away any moisture from the horse’s coat. Other uses for fleeces/coolers include:

Slowly cooling down and drying off when sweaty after exercise, which helps with muscle recovery After bathing/washing down to quickly and effectively dry the horse During travelling, to regulate body temperature and lift away any sweat To keep your horse clean in the stable or at a show For layering beneath other rugs for warmth and/or hygiene
