Show Jumping Dress Code

If you're new to show jumping and are looking for advice on what to wear for your first big day, you've come to the right place!

Show jumping is a popular and inclusive sport for riders of varying ability. If you're just starting out in unaffiliated or affiliated (British Show Jumping), it's worth making yourself familiar with the rules and dress code for on the day. Smaller unaffiliated shows are normally more relaxed, but when you move up the levels your turnout will become more important, especially if competing under British Showjumping rules.

Clarify the rules in the latest British Show Jumping Rulebook if you're unsure, and to take into account any changes.

Show Jumping Dress Code

You can keep your competition outfit as simple as you want to when just starting out. The British Show Jumping Rulebook insists that when inside the area competitors must at all times wear correct riding attire complete with jackets. It also strongly advises that all jewellery is removed prior to competing to reduce the risk of injury.

Protective EquipmentYou can wear either a jockey skull or a peaked helmet for show jumping, provided it meets the current PAS015 safety standards and are kitemarked.

Body protectors and air jackets are optional.

Jackets

Short. traditional style tailored jackets or tweed/hacking jackets are worn, but more modern styles in vented fabrics or with zip closures are allowed.

Shirt & Stock/Tie

You can wear either long or short-sleeved show shirts for competing as long as they have a white collar. Long-sleeved shirts should also have white cuffs. Women can wear shirts with high white collars without a stock. If you're wearing a hacking jacket, pair it with a traditional collared show shirt and a coloured tie or stock.

In hot weather you may be allowed to ride without your jacket, but you should be wearing a shirt with either long or short sleeves.

Legwear

Competition breeches and jodhpurs should be white, beige, pale yellow, grey or fawn - black or navy breeches are not allowed.

Footwear

It's compulsory to wear traditional style long riding boots, or jodhpur boots with traditionally cut gaiters. They must be either:

Plain black, brown or navy Black or navy with mahogany tops Black, brown or navy with patent tops

Chaps and half chaps are not permitted unless for Junior riders, when half chaps are allowed. Spurs are permitted, but check the rulebook for the correct types allowed.
