“My rug was sold to me as ripstop - why has it ripped?”
Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean your rug is faulty!
Your turnout rug was described as "ripstop" when you bought it, but it's ripped! “Ripstop” refers to the weave within the outer fabric of the rug which is designed to help contain rips rather than stop them completely. The ripstop design of the material doesn’t guarantee the fabric will not rip at all.
Ripstop fabric is designed by interspersing reinforced strands throughout the standard weave fibres, giving the material a series of thicker, stronger areas which help to prevent a rip from spreading once it’s started. Limiting the ripped area also makes rugs much easier and cheaper to repair.
The ripstop feature of rugs is designed in such a way that if your horse was to get stuck or caught in the field the rug will give and break, reducing the risk of any injury and helping to ensure your horse is safe.
