Spurs & Spur Straps
Spurs help riders to apply more accurate, precise aids while riding and also help to “back-up” aids for a sharper response. Once the rider’s leg position has become established and the horse is experienced in understanding and responding correctly to instructions through the legs, seat and hands, spurs can be useful for refining the aids for more advanced work such as lateral movements.
The type of spurs used will depend on the horse’s sensitivity and level of training, as well as the accuracy of the rider’s leg. Before competition, always check the rulebook to ensure your spurs are legal for your discipline.
