BETA 2018 Level 3 Body Protector Standards

BETA’s widely recognised Body Protector Standards were originally developed by bringing together riding organisations, doctors, riders, manufacturers and retailers. These standards are regularly revised, in line with changes to European standards and with technical advances and research.

The BETA Standard sets criteria for shock-absorption, controls the area of the body that must be covered and ensures there are minimal gaps between the protective foam panels. Garments are re-tested annually for consistency in the quality of materials used and the manufacturing process.

The latest BETA standard came into effect last year, so all new garments should be labelled with the BETA 2018 certification label. Body protectors are graded by the level of protection offered. Levels 1 and 2 are only unusually worn by professional, licensed jockeys to help them to make the weight – they are not considered appropriate protection for general or competitive riding.

Level 3

Level 3 is considered appropriate for general riding, competitions including eventing and for working with horses. They should prevent minor bruising that would have resulted in pain and stiffness, reduce soft tissue injuries and prevent rib fractures.

Look for the black and turquoise BETA 2018 Level 3 labelled garments when shopping for a new body protector and be reassured that your safety wear is up to standard.
