For horses that treat their field like a playground, it’s important to offer the correct leg protection to help avoid injuries that occur during turnout. Protecting the legs is also important if your horse is prone to mud fever - as with most things, prevention is better than cure!
When deciding whether your horse requires leg protection it’s important to first weigh up the pros and cons. As much as boots will protect the legs, they can also cause issues if they’re not used properly.
What are turnout boots for?
Turnout boots will keep the legs clean, help to prevent mud fever, protect the legs from knocks or scrapes and provide support to the tendons and ligaments. They can be essential for horses prone to field injuries or for mud fever prone horses.
If you’re using boots for protection against knocks and scrapes, brushing boots may be a good option opposed to a full turnout boot - they cover less of the leg, allowing the skin to breathe and with a lower risk of overheating the tendons.
Look for turnout boots which are made from a breathable and ventilated fabric to keep the legs cool. Any boots you use for turnout should be strong and durable but not absorbent - boots that absorb water will become heavy and more likely to rub the legs as well as weakening the skin underneath.
If they are to be worn daily, choose turnout boots which can be washed off and are quick-drying. Dry boots should be applied to clean, dry legs to prevent rubs, sores and discomfort. Turnout boots should be removed after turnout and the legs checked thoroughly for any signs of heat, injury or swelling.
How should turnout boots fit?
Turnout boots and mud fever chaps fit around the lower leg, starting below the knee and covering the whole of the lower leg including the pasterns, finishing at the heel (without having excess material that the horse may stand on). They should fit snugly, but not too tightly, to prevent mud and other materials from being able to get in between the boot and the horse’s skin.
