Description

• Provide protection against acute and chronic inflammation by slowing the production of some inflammatory chemicals thereby preventing the breakdown of cartilage.

• Provide protection against the onset of chronic pain

• Provide a buffer against the over sensitisation of nerve endings

• Provide a buffer against degeneration of vulnerable areas such as joints and feet.

If you are using a regular joint supplement your horse may not be fully protected.

NSAID’s (bute) are prohibited during competition and now many people are turning to phytotherapy to provide therapeutic activity to keep their horses sound, well, free from stiffness and most importantly to avoid contravening governing bodies such as the FEI and the BHA. To support you and your horse, Sportmax contains several compounds to enable multi targeted therapy towards defence, protection and repair mechanisms of soft tissue with special relevance to the hardworking synovial joints.

Following damage either through repetition exercise, overloading of the shock absorbing mechanism, mechanical, traumatic, infection and tumour growth the body releases multiple chemical mediators from the innate (general or first line of defence) immune system. This inflammatory soup consists of cytokines, growth factors, kinins, purines, aminoids, prostanoids, and ions including protons. Some stimulate the perception of pain and some sensitise nerve endings to increase the feeling of pain. Nociceptor function is substantially changed in response to inflammation, trauma and injury altering threshold transmission and excitability which contributes to the pain felt in the peripheral nerves and also produces changes in membrane properties.

Modern methods of support provide inhibition of certain signalling molecules in particular the interleukins 1-12 that affect the downstream events of the inflammatory response thus minimizing damage to tissue. It has been recognised that the interleukins play a large part in many disease states in humans and recent research have cited interleukin action in equine diseases such as laminitis, EMS, arthritis and Cushings. Development of synthetic treatments of cytokine production has been hampered by serious adverse side effects; another important reason why using plant compounds is recommended.

Altering cytokine expression and targeting their receptors offers potential to prevent and minimise inflammation and degenerative changes within the musculoskeletal system.Downstream events in the production of inflammatory chemicals eventually produce Cox 1 and Cox 2. NSAID’s inhibit the production of these chemicals but are illegal for competition and long term use in many animals is not recommended because of adverse side effects. Plant compounds are ideally suited to provide upstream modulation of cytokines to reduce the potential for chronic over production of Cox 1 and Cox 2 particularly in horses involved in the rigours of training, dressage and jumping.

The plant compounds in Sportmax have been cited in the Alternative Medicine Review and the Evidence based Complementary and Alternative Medicine as having properties that inhibit Interleukin 1-12.

Sportmax also contains plant compounds including Proanthrocyanadins which prevent the degradation of glycosaminoglycans in joint cartilage and inhibit Substance P, a primary neuropeptide released before the full inflammatory response. In this way the joints are protected against degeneration and inflammation, this mechanism is particularly important in horses involved in jumping and dressage.(American Journal of Veterinary Research 2000 and Equine Veterinary Journal 2004. In this study workers found that levels of substance P were elevated in horses diagnosed with joint pain. All of the 22 lame horses involved in the trial had elevated levels of PGE2 )

Effective and potent analgesics especially for chronic pain Sportmax contains recently discovered anti- nociceptive (anti- pain) substances including unique alkaloids terpenoids and flavanoids which provide therapeutic action to complex pathways relating to electrophysical properties and molecules associated with pain transmission. Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is a type of omega-6 fatty acid known to lessen joint pain and stiffness.

Historically plant chemicals have proven a rich source in the discovery of analgesic drugs and will continue to maintain a relevant position in the future as new research and extraction processes become available.

How long will it take for my order to arrive?

We want to be crystal clear when it comes to managing your expectations; our website is stock managed to show you what items are available for same day dispatch and those which are externally warehoused and therefore, will take a little longer to arrive with you.

Simply make your product selections and a message will pop up telling you how long it will take us to dispatch your order; we call this our product availability message.  If you are happy with the product availability message on the item, checkout your order and we will ship your order in the timeframe stated.

If you have lots of items in your basket, please use the longest product availability message to work out when your order will arrive.  We care about our environmental impact, so we don't split ship orders unless you get in touch to request that we do so.  We will let you know on your order confirmation when we expect your order will arrive with you.

Whilst we do our best to meet the handling times stated in the product availability message, occasionally we can experience some delays in the delivery network.  At these times, a team member will email you to keep you updated on the progress of your order.

Selecting FedEx or DPD does not change our expected handling times; the service selected is always from the point of despatch not purchase.

If you do require an order urgently, please contact us before ordering to ensure we can accommodate your requirements as we hate to be party poopers!

Which couriers do you use?

Before choosing a courier, please make sure you are happy with the product availability message as these handling times apply before we ship your order.  If it doesn’t show “Express warehouse: immediate despatch”, it will not leave us on the same day you have placed the order.

We use FedEx, DPD and Royal Mail for most of our deliveries.  Some large items may come with other trusted 3rd party couriers.

Our Royal Mail economy service is usually delivered in two - three days.  You will receive a text message and an email confirming the day of delivery; Royal Mail provide a four hour time window for delivery.

FedEx and DPD are delivered next working day from point of despatch for UK mainland addresses or in two working days for Scottish Highlands, Islands, Northern Ireland, and Irish addresses.  You will receive a text message and an email confirming the day for delivery.

Selecting FedEx or DPD does not mean your order will bypass our handling times; FedEx and DPD are from the point of despatch, not the point of purchase.

If an item has an "Oversized goods must select FedEx" overlay on it, please ensure you select FedEx as your delivery option to avoid any delays with your order.
